This rigorous, well-argued, illustrated and humorous book popularizes the latest advances in
Theoretical Physics research on climate change in a highly accessible way. Using very simple
diagrams and explanations, it shows that :
1. Climate change is not continuous and reversible, but is heading towards an irreversible
tipping point. The series of extreme events we are experiencing is the warning sign for such a nearby
tipping point. The explanation is surprisingly simple.
2. If climate inaction continues, this tipping point will not occur at the end of the century, but
very probably well before, within a few years.
3. If this was to happen, the rise in average global temperatures would not be 1.5 o C (already
reached), or even 2, 3 or 4 o C, but probably 7 to 10 o C! This would be the 6th extinction.
Sadly, these conclusions are even more alarmist than those reported by the IPCC.
It is therefore extremely urgent to convince and act, as our survival depends on it.
This urgency is such that we cannot waste time investing in solutions that will not be operational
within 20 years...
The authors :
François Louchet obtained an engineering degree at Ecole des Mines (Nancy, France), the
Ğ agregation de Physique ğ, and a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics. He was a Professor at Grenoble
University (National Polytechnical Institute). He also was an Invited Professor at Ecole Polytechnique
Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland), and Guest Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Dept. of
Energy (USA), at McMaster University (Canada), Charles University (Prague), Balseiro Institute
(Comision Nacional de Energia Atómica, Argentina), and Ğ OCMR Distinguished Lecturer ğ at
McMaster, Toronto and Kingston Universities (Canada). He is a specialist in Physics of Complex
Systems.
Serge Castel is a chemical engineer. After studying in Strasbourg and Delft he had a career in major
international chemical companies (process development, production, operational excellence, change
management). In his spare time, he draws and paints in watercolors and practices cartooning.
