A raw and emotional collection of poetry on life with severe chronic illness. The Words That Saved Me is a reminder of how life can get better even when it truly feels impossible.
Both heartbreaking and hopeful, it follows the story of how I found the courage and resilience to live when it truly felt unbearable.
Bedbound, reliant on my family to wash and feed me, spending most of the day alone and in silence, I fell into a deep depression. In The Words That Saved Me I chronicle my experience of learning to find the possibility of peace amongst the pain, limitations and isolation I was, and still am facing, through poetry.
Initially an outlet for my pain, writing poetry also became a way to learn to use self-compassion and kindness; to value myself; and a way to remind myself of the power of finding refuge in the present moment. Each chapter focuses on a specific part of this journey.
After many months I began to see some improvements in my physical health, initially very small but ultimately leading to a better quality of life, so the final section is a list of ‘Healing Things’ in the hope they may help others untangle the web of chronic illness.
Whether you have experienced chronic illness or not, the poems in this book are relatable to many of life’s experiences and emotions, they are a testament to the strength of the human spirit - how we find a way to keep going when every part of us is saying give up.
