About the Author

M. B. McLatchey holds degrees in Comparative Literature & Languages, in Teaching, and in English studies from Harvard University, Brown University, and Williams College as well as the MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College. A widely published poet with a lifelong passion for literature, philosophy, and ancient and modern languages, she has over over thirty years of experience teaching the Classics and Literature to college students.

In their pursuit of the truth, scholars make use of two types of sources: primary and secondary. Whereas secondary sources provide scholarly interpretations of the past, primary sources provide first-hand testimony of the past. Unlike the historian who summarizes Cicero's Lecture on Friendship, the primary source gives us Cicero himself, his exact words as they appeared in a letter that he sent to a friend in the 1st century B.C.
