Growing up with a unique name presented its own unique challenges for 12-year old Shekeyla. Over time, she becomes empowered by her differences and encourages those around her to be welcoming of diversity when it comes to the names of others and so much more.

This true story teaches inclusivity by experiencing the perspective of a uniquely named child. We journey through the emotions of being the “oddly named girl” in school before discovering that those who are willing to put in a little effort to say names properly are also willing to be inclusive in other ways.

About the Author

The author, Shekeyla Nicole Caldwell Sandore, grew up in Houston, Texas. She studied at the London School of Economics and Brandeis University where she received a dual degree in economics and politics. After spending five years at a large private investment management firm in Boston, Shekeyla went on to study at the Harvard Business School to complete her MBA studies.

While at HBS, Shekeyla was introduced to numerous people who incidentally reminded her of the struggles and acceptance she had as a child with correcting people who mispronounced her name. As she corrected her Applied Business Analytics professor in front of her 76 classmates by using the same "jingle" she came up with as a child, she was inspired to write the story of A Name Like Mine.
