Jean Toomer (1894-1967) was an African-American poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born in Washington, D.C., and attended the University of Chicago and the New York Institute of Social Work. His most famous work is the 1923 collection of poetry, short stories, drama, and essays, Cane. The book explores African-American life in the rural South and has had a lasting influence on American literature. Toomer was an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and in addition to Cane, he also wrote novels, short stories, and plays. He died in 1967 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. His legacy lives on in his works, which continue to inspire and influence readers around the world.
