Synopsis

Eric Stanton is a drifter and a con artist. After he gets kicked off a bus from L.A., he finds himself in the small coastal town of Walton. This is where he meets Stella, a local waitress. She’s down on her luck, too, so they make a good pair. So good that Stanton decides to pull a grift on a naïve young woman named Emmie with a large inheritance. Stanton figures that with her $10,000 in his pocket, he and Stella can make a fresh start somewhere else. What he doesn’t figure is that Emmie will actually fall for him. Then Stella is found murdered. And Mark Judd, the cop in charge of the investigation, is getting pretty rough with his interrogations. It’d make anybody sweat. And Stanton is beginning to sweat plenty… This release is the second in a new series of books that were turned into classic film noirs. Fallen Angel was filmed by Otto Preminger in 1945 with Dana Andrews, Alice Faye and Linda Darnell.

About the Author

Marty Holland was born Mary Hauenstein on November 2, 1913 in Beaverdam, Ohio. She began writing at 12, and after moving to Hollywood with her family, she got a job as a script typist for the movie studios. Her writing career began with short stories for the pulps before her first novel in 1945, Fallen Angel, which she sold to 20th Century Fox and was immediately filmed by Otto Preminger. She followed this with The Glass Heart, a twisted tale of deceit for which James M. Cain wrote an unfilmed screenplay; and the 1950 story idea for The File on Thelma Jordon, directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Barbara Stanwyck. Holland continued to write stories and screenplays and did uncredited writing for TV before dying of cancer in 1971. Her final novel, Baby Godiva, was published posthumously in 2011.
