Not all leaders rise. Some are forged in fire.
Doug Smith was a social worker, a policy insider at the Texas Capitol, and a father—until untreated mental illness and addiction led him to rob a bank and land in prison for nearly six years.
The Path of Rocks and Thorns isn’t a redemption story dressed up for TED. It’s a descent. A reckoning. And, ultimately, a resurrection.
Structured like Dante’s Inferno, this unflinching memoir follows Smith’s journey through the darkest corners of his past—childhood trauma, shame, self-sabotage—and into the brutal clarity of prison. But within the chaos, he found something most leadership books never fully embrace: truth.
This is not a “five steps to better leadership” book.
It’s a call to strip away the lies we tell ourselves and lead from a place of radical honesty, humility, and earned wisdom. Smith shares what he learned teaching sexual assault prevention inside prison walls, what it means to rebuild a life from nothing, and how leadership isn’t about status—it’s about service, integrity, and the ability to rise from your own wreckage.
For those stuck in cycles of failure, fighting to recover, or questioning their worth—this book doesn’t offer comfort. It offers something better: permission to lead anyway.
The Path of Rocks and Thorns is a raw and necessary read for anyone tired of corporate platitudes and hungry for something real. The truth is ugly. So is growth. But that’s where real leadership begins.

Q: What makes your approach to leadership different?
Doug: Most people think leadership is about climbing—getting better, rising above, being seen. But the best leaders I've met aren't the ones who climbed. They're the ones who fell, got wrecked, and then rebuilt something real. I learned leadership teaching sexual assault prevention in prison, sitting in a circle with men who had every reason to stop trusting. That's where I learned that leading means investing in people—and doing the hard internal work most folks avoid.
Q: What do you want readers to take away from your book?
Doug: That their darkest moments don't disqualify them—they define them. Your story, your scars, your breakdowns—they're not weaknesses. They're your raw material. If you're willing to look closely, they can become your greatest leadership assets. That's the heart of this book: you can lead because of what you've been through, not despite it.
Q: What was the hardest part of writing The Path of Rocks and Thorns?
Doug: Having to live through it again. There were moments during the editing process where I'd feel physically sick rereading what I'd been through. But I couldn't write a book about leadership forged in darkness without going all the way into the dark. Like Dante's Inferno, the way up was blocked until I went all the way down.
Q: What problem are you trying to solve with your work?
Doug: Shame. Disconnection. Self-doubt. The belief that we're broken beyond repair. I've lived inside that belief system, and I've seen what it does—it ruins careers, kills relationships, ends lives. My work is about helping people see that their worth isn't gone—it's buried. And when they dig it up, they don't just heal—they lead.
He lost everything. Then he learned how to lead.
Doug Smith wasn't supposed to end up in prison. He had a master's degree, a policy job at the Texas Capitol, a teaching role at a major university. But untreated mental illness and addiction burned it all to the ground—and nearly took his life.
Inside a prison cell, stripped of identity and control, Doug started again. The Path of Rocks and Thorns is the story of what happens when you stop performing and start telling the truth. It's a book about how accountability becomes power, how vulnerability becomes strength—and how leadership isn't about having the answers, but being willing to go first.
This is a book for anyone who's ever felt wrecked, ashamed, stuck, or unsure they can find their way back. Doug's journey doesn't offer easy inspiration. It offers something far more useful: proof that rising begins with reckoning.
This isn't a guidebook. It's a reckoning.
Doug Smith has lived through what most leadership books won't touch: mental illness, addiction, disgrace, and nearly six years in prison. He lost everything—career, reputation, identity—and had to rebuild from the inside out.
The Path of Rocks and Thorns doesn't offer quick wins or polished takeaways. It's about what happens when you stop performing and start telling the truth. It's about learning to lead not despite your failures—but because of them.
With brutal honesty and hard-won wisdom, Doug shares what it means to rise from the wreckage with integrity, clarity, and purpose. Whether you're recovering, rebuilding, or reckoning with your past, this book isn't here to fix you—it's here to walk beside you.
