Collaborative Leadership for the Classroom helps teachers prepare students for their highly interactive world. My original Twin-Poled design lets teachers design their own individual leader models. I have successfully married collaboration with the shopworn command-and-control, a leftover from the Industrial Age. Readers will find that my use of a building block scheme allows them to add knowledge to what has already been learned from the book. This developmental/incremental design creates collaborative practitioners out of readers in one 60-minute read. Autobiography: I am a former military officer who had to learn to collaborate if I were to have a successful transition to civilian life. So I taught collaboration at the masters level for thirty years. Much evidence of my teaching is represented in Collaborative Leadership for the Classroom.

A fomer Marine Corps Officer, Don Broadwell began teaching collaborative leadership in 1984 after a career counselor recommended he shed the authoritarian style he learned in the Marines. Following grad school and a seven-year stint with the military, Don devoted himself to children's reading, spending a career supplying library books to schools. He retired from sales after forty years but continues to train leaders on nights and weekends, as he has for the past four decades.
Don's CV includes an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Princeton Theological Seminary degree in pastoral counseling. As an adjunct instructor, Don has taught for the University of Idaho (Coeur d'Alene), Seattle Pacific University, Antioch University (Seattle), and Green River College. His break-out workshops for national conferences include the Association for Experiential Education and the Association of Federally Employed Women.
Today's students live in a collaborative world—yet most classrooms still operate with top-down leadership models designed a century ago. Collaborative Leadership for the Classroom closes that gap by giving teachers a practical way to lead, teach, and inspire through true collaboration.
In this timely guide, Don Broadwell introduces his award-winning leader design, a flexible system that allows educators to create their own leadership style instead of relying on outdated, industrial-age hierarchies. Using a simple building-block approach, Broadwell shows how new insights connect naturally with experience teachers already have—turning theory into action in a fast, intuitive process. Clear, concise, and designed to be read in just 60 minutes, this book helps teachers transition from traditional instructors to confident collaborative practitioners. Perfect for educators at every level, this is the leadership model today's interactive world demands.
