Synopsis

In Velkyn's Hollow, Seren and Calder agree to spend thirty days discovering whether a life together might suit them. They will have separate rooms, independent incomes, and the right to leave. Neither is promised love.

Seren makes her living knowing exactly what a record can prove. Calder works in an archive whose inherited permissions have long seemed necessary to keep the town functioning. Both are accustomed to being competent. Sharing a home introduces less manageable concerns: badly timed kisses, the pleasure of being expected for supper, and a growing desire to stay beyond the experiment's end.

Outside their rooms, the town's safeguards are failing the people they were meant to protect. A household faces displacement, private circumstances become grounds for official judgment, and decisions made in good faith acquire consequences neither Seren nor Calder can dismiss. Their work draws them into the dispute from different sides, testing the trust they are only beginning to build.

As the final review approaches, their growing attachment becomes something the council can observe-and claim as evidence that its experiment works. Seren and Calder must decide how much of their life they are willing to surrender to an official account, and what choosing each other will mean once the thirty days are over.

The second novel in T.L. Johnson's Velkyn's Hollow series, The Measure of Alignment is an intimate adult romantic fantasy about desire, privacy, and building a shared life in a town accustomed to having a say.
