A crossover coming-of-age novel, based on the author's true life experiences playing center on a high school football team in northwest Virginia as schools were going through integration mandated by the U.S. Supreme Court ― the late 1960s. A culture clash between a white family with keen sensitivity to racial justice and a community still steeped in class disparities, rooted in race, a racist coach and racist teammates make life rough for Clay Spurlock, the newly installed center ― who becomes the moral center of the school and indeed, the entire town. The book also traverses the three iconic political assassinations of the period and their reverberations in the South: those of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy. A late teenage romance adds a light sparkle to an engaging story.
