Synopsis

To save her world, a young goddess must first survive ours.

When her best friend Dimitri mysteriously vanishes, twelve-year-old Kassie—daughter of the gods Mars and Caïssa—sees her family blamed and war erupt between kingdoms. Sent from her sheltered home on Chess Mountain, she must hide her true identity on Earth, complete a dangerous quest, and face her greatest challenge yet—surviving middle school in New York City.

Masquerading as a regular student, she encounters a mysterious teacher, a bully, and a quiet boy with a metal leg who becomes an unexpected ally. But dangerous exiles are stalking her from the shadows, forcing Kassie to trust her instincts, find her courage, and decide who she can truly rely on.

Torn between her divine duty and the human friendships she begins to form, Kassie learns that every move matters—and sometimes the greatest victories require the bravest sacrifices.

A fast-paced fantasy adventure for fans of Percy Jackson, Matilda, and epic quests, blending ancient chess lore, hidden clues, surprising twists, and heartfelt journeys—laying the foundation for the upcoming fantasy series, The Chess Mountain Chronicles.

About the Author

"The Princess, the Knight, and the Lost God: A Chess Story," Ms. Winifred's first novel, walked away with first-place honors bestowed from the American Writing Awards and the Pinnacle Awards in its early months of publication. It has since won several additional first-place awards and over 200 5-star editorial and customer reviews. The prestigious Kirkus Reviews awarded it with the accolade, "Our verdict: get it."

As of 2024, she has written two additional chess fiction books for young children, as well as "Murray the Cat: First Adventures." More children's books are currently underway. In addition, she has published a volume of her late mother's poetry and is working on compiling the second one.

Victoria Winifred was born in Brooklyn and now lives in East Tennessee with her husband. She taught elementary school in NYC and Tennessee for sixteen years. Her favorite additional accreditation is her Chess in Education graduate certificate from The University of Texas at Dallas, which gave her the justification to connect lessons in every discipline to chess at every opportunity, and to flood her classroom with the game, much to the delight and academic success of her students.

Victoria is now an education consultant and blogger for ChessInEducation, and an active member of the Author's Guild of Tennessee and the Society of Children's Books and Illustrators Midsouth. She runs a local chess club and has a fan club on the largest chess site in the world. She was a speaker for the FIDE London Chess Conference in 2023 on the subject of how chess promotes academic readiness in young children, and is now scheduling school visits about her author's journey and other customizable presentations.
