From the Inside Flap

I have one mission in writing this book.

It is to make women aware that they have more options than they thought possible when it comes to their abnormal periods. By knowing this one fact that there are options, women don't have to be trapped into the world of synthetic pharmaceuticals-if they don't want to. I know firsthand that these pharmaceutical options can do more harm than good in some cases.

Nature often has everything people need to help their bodies have a normal period. This simple fact is life-changing if you know how to harness the power of what the earth gives us.

While I don't claim to be an expert in hormones, I also know that no one is truly an expert in women's hormones and our organs. How do I know this? Research related to women's health largely didn't start until 1993, when women's inclusion in research became law by the National Institutes of health1. That was a wee 30 years ago.

You may know that birth control was invented in the 1950s, but it was invented by men2. And as such, the testing on it was more for their benefit and not ours. For example, those women who were first tested on "the pill" who reported side effects were considered "unreliable participants." Many of these women were tested on without their informed consent, which is also a major human rights violation2-3. Some of them even died from these experiments. Today's birth control is a bit more refined than it was in the 1950s, but many women like me don't want the side effects that these hormones bring. They want a natural, healthy period that isn't masked by the pill.

On a related note, did you know that when you take the pill, you don't ovulate? How can that be the main solution to birth control and period health? While I truly support women who are on the pill because it provides freedom from pregnancy, it isn't tolerable for some and miserable to take for many.

Natural Medicine Silenced By Big Pharma

What I do claim to be an expert in is research, but you should know that research in natural medicine is systematically silenced by powerful forces, including Big Pharma. For over three decades during graduate school and afterward, I have immersed myself in the National Library of Medicine because early on, I learned that preventive medicine and herbal research are rarely, if ever, disseminated to doctors. I have a deep desire to do better for myself and my patients. Because of this, I have uncovered research gems about natural medicine that can help people which is what I'm here to do for you. I've had help from my wonderful naturopath along the way, but a lot of what I know is by tirelessly looking for answers.

As a registered dietitian for over 25 years, I know there is a better way for women's health. By studying herbs, natural medicines, and food-related strategies to overcome hormonal issues, I have much to share with the world. This comes full circle with my mission in writing this book: to share the vast array of options that get little mention in this world otherwise. And I know that you can, like me, learn not only to embrace being a woman but to enjoy the ebbs and flows that give us our strength.

These research gems I have discovered about natural healing aren't shared in medical schools because of a long-standing separation of natural medicine from medical schools. This separation was single-highhandedly established by the cunning actions of one man named Abraham Flexner who shut down any medical school if they were teaching natural medicines back in the early 1900s4. He was hired by the coffers of Rockefeller and Carnegie who were capitalists that happened to be cashing in on pharmaceuticals made from their petrochemicals which are chemicals derived from oil. I'm serious: they were wielding their power because of their monopolies and turning these oil chemicals into drugs. It still stands this way today, the shunning of natural medicines, whether there is research behind these natural medicines or not.
