Synopsis
A bar stool in Louisiana almost ended my story.
I could have become another veteran statistic. Instead, I remembered something the Marine Corps put in me years earlier: if you haven't died or passed out, you can always keep on fighting.
I chose to fight. But first I had to put down the weight I'd been hauling for most of my life.
I began my career flying an AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter, trained to be precise, lethal, and emotionless. I ended it as a UH-60 Blackhawk MEDEVAC commander flying into firefights to carry out the broken and the bleeding. Somewhere between those two cockpits I learned the hardest lesson of my life.
The heaviest weapon I ever carried was not mounted on an aircraft.
It was the grudge I held against my father. He was an angry man who beat me as a boy, and I carried that into every relationship, every mission, and every quiet moment — until I sat at his bedside before he died and chose to forgive him.
