Synopsis
In a shallow society obsessed with beauty and manners, can sixteen-year-old Amelia pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a journalist and find her true worth in the process?
In 1899 Portland, Oregon, sixteen-year-old Amelia’s life revolves around climbing the social ladder. When she realizes the shallowness of her life, she resolves to pursue her long-cherished dream of becoming a journalist. But her mother’s criticisms have made her unsure of herself, and besides, newspaper men don’t want women, much less pampered girls, to write anything other than the society column. So, when a friend from her old life offers her a job at his paper, it seems an answer to prayer, but it ends up bringing more challenges and confusion into her life. Amelia must decide what kind of life she really wants for herself, if being a journalist is worth the sacrifices it will take to achieve her dream, and what it means to be a woman of true beauty in a society obsessed with all the wrong things.
