About the Author

Q: What inspired The Sovereign Self?
After decades in entertainment—an industry obsessed with youth—I realized how little space our culture gives women to age with agency. I wanted to reframe the conversation. Not about anti-aging, but pro-living. The book is my invitation for women to lead their third act from the inside out—with confidence, clarity, and unapologetic joy.

Q: You use the phrase "refinement rather than reinvention." What do you mean by that?
Reinvention suggests we were wrong before—that we need to become someone else. Refinement honors that we've already done the work. It's editing our lives with discernment: less noise, fewer apologies, more truth.

Q: What's one myth about women over sixty that you want to challenge?
That we become invisible. We don't. We become selectively visible. The Sovereign Self shows women how to choose their spotlight—to decide where they want to be seen and what they want to be seen for.

Q: You talk a lot about "emotional mastery." How is your approach different?
I see emotional mastery as emotional literacy. It's not about suppressing feelings—it's about naming, feeling, and metabolizing them so we can respond with clarity instead of reaction. It's learning to interrupt reactivity—to pause, breathe, and choose. I call it the 30-second reset.

Q: What do you hope women take away from your work?
That it's never too late to lead yourself differently. Aging isn't an ending—it's an awakening to your own authority. The third act is our most honest, potent, and beautifully self-directed season if we have the tools and courage to claim it.

From the Inside Flap

You are your own revolution.

It's time to rewrite the story of what it means to age as a woman.
No more second-guessing, shrinking, or settling.

In The Sovereign Self, Stacey Dutton calls you to rise—boldly, unapologetically, and with intention. This is your invitation to live with radical self-trust, to lead your life from the inside out, and to finally claim the freedom that's been yours all along. Because liberation doesn't come from reinvention—it comes from remembrance.
