Synopsis

Why do people living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression still dream, create, love, and seek meaning—sometimes with remarkable intensity?

In The Sparks That Endure, psychiatrist Clovis Raymond, MD invites readers into a profound exploration of what he calls the fourteen enduring sparks—the universal drives that survive even the most serious mental illnesses: sex, money, food, music, spirituality, creativity, movement, rituals, nature, humor, touch, storytelling, hope, and freedom.

Drawing on neuroscience, lived experience, and decades of clinical practice, Dr. Raymond reveals how these sparks illuminate the resilience of the human brain and spirit. Each chapter blends research with patient vignettes, reflection questions, and recovery-oriented tools that bridge the worlds of psychiatry, trauma, and everyday life.

Far from a textbook, this is a conversation about what makes us human, even in the face of illness. Clinicians will find new ways to connect with their patients; families will discover hope; and readers will see that healing is not just the absence of symptoms—but the rekindling of what has always endured.

Whether you are a mental-health professional, caregiver, or survivor, this book will change how you see recovery, purpose, and the unstoppable sparks that define us all.

From the Back Cover

What if recovery from serious mental illness begins not with what is broken, but with what endures?
In The Sparks That Endure, psychiatrist and educator Clovis Raymond, MD, challenges deficit-based views of mental illness by illuminating a powerful truth: even amid psychosis, mood instability, trauma, and cognitive disruption, people continue to hold onto core human drives that give life meaning.
Drawing on neuroscience, clinical experience, and lived narratives, Dr. Raymond introduces fourteen enduring "sparks"—including intimacy, security, nourishment, music, meaning, creativity, movement, ritual, nature, humor, touch, storytelling, hope, and freedom—that persist even in the most severe psychiatric conditions. Rather than viewing these drives as symptoms to be suppressed, the book reframes them as expressions of identity, dignity, and resilience.
Compassionate, rigorous, and deeply human, The Sparks That Endure offers clinicians, families, educators, and readers a new lens through which to understand recovery—one that honors not only survival, but the humanity that refuses to disappear.

From the Inside Flap

For decades, serious mental illness has been described primarily in terms of deficits—what is lost, impaired, or broken. Yet in clinical rooms, hospital wards, families, and communities, another truth quietly persists: even in the presence of psychosis, mood instability, trauma, and cognitive disruption, people continue to hold onto the same core human longings that define us all.
In The Sparks That Endure, psychiatrist and educator Clovis Raymond, MD, offers a human-centered framework for understanding recovery through what remains alive rather than what is extinguished. Drawing on neuroscience, lived experience, and years of clinical practice, Dr. Raymond identifies fourteen enduring "sparks"—including intimacy, security, nourishment, music, meaning, creativity, movement, ritual, nature, humor, touch, storytelling, hope, and freedom—that persist even in the most severe mental illnesses.
Rather than viewing these drives as symptoms to be suppressed, The Sparks That Endure reframes them as signals of identity, dignity, and resilience. Through clinical vignettes, research-informed discussion, and compassionate reflection, the book challenges deficit-based models of care and invites a more humane, person-centered approach to psychiatry and mental health treatment.
Written for clinicians, trainees, families, peer advocates, and thoughtful readers alike, The Sparks That Endure is both a professional resource and a deeply human meditation on what it means to remain oneself—even when the mind is under siege.
