Wind In The Trees and The Rabbit Hunt; A Cherokee Boy's Adventure is the first book in the Wind In The Trees; A Cherokee Boy's Adventure Series.
This adventure ensues as an 11-year-old Cherokee boy, Wind In The Trees, flexes his hunting skills to help provide for his family. Unexpected circumstances arise, and he is confronted with the needs of others and his own desires. Could tuning his ear to listen to The Great Spirit offer a treasure greater than pride or praise?
This first book is written as part of a series of "living books," as described by child educator Charlotte Mason. It is historically based in Cherokee culture during a time of relative peace in 1822, before the Removal Period or Trail of Tears, and introduces readers to a few useful words in Tsalagi, the Cherokee language. Family relationships, historically useful skills, and good moral character are the backbone of the stories and adventures.
It was written as a short, chapter book of approximately 8,000 words with pencil-sketched illustrations throughout. The shorter word count employs brief descriptions, excitement, manageable vocabulary, and sentence lengths on the shorter side with story topics similar to the Little House on The Prairie series by Laura Ingles Wilder.
