The Defense Sector is the Most Rewarding Career Path in Engineering. Most Students Have No Idea How to Break Into It.
The aerospace and defense industry builds the most advanced systems on the planet: stealth aircraft, precision munitions, cyber defense tools, and space launch vehicles. It offers mission-driven work, exceptional stability, and careers that genuinely matter. But to outsiders, it looks like a black box: an intimidating world of acronyms, security clearances, and unspoken rules.
The Defense Sector Launchpad is your map through that black box.
Written by a mechanical engineer with direct experience at Sandia National Laboratories and introduced by a Chief Engineer of a national security program, this is not a career theory book. It is a practical, field-tested playbook written by an engineer, for engineers.
In 27 chapters and 400+ pages, you will learn:
• The full landscape of the defense industry and how to navigate it
• The Air, Land, Sea, Space, and Cyber domains in depth
• The strategic coursework, internships, and projects that make you a must-hire candidate
• How to write a keyword-optimized, two-page defense resume that gets read
• How to crack the technical interview and demystify the security clearance investigation
• The unwritten rules of your first 90 days and how to build a career that lasts
Plus: ready-to-use appendices including a resume template, interview prep sheet, internship pre-flight
checklist, and a guide to the classified world.
If you are an engineering student or recent graduate who wants a stable, purpose-driven career on the cutting edge of technology, this book is your unfair advantage.
Available in Hardcover, Paperback, and eBook.

Alec Milner is a Research and Development Mechanical Design Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories and a systems integrator with deep experience in the aerospace and defense industry. His career has taken him through the full engineering lifecycle, ranging from the gritty, hands-on testing of tactical vehicles at government proving grounds to the abstract, high-consequence design of advanced strategic systems within the national lab complex.
Throughout his work on next-generation space and missile programs, he has collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to develop complex hardware, spearheaded multi-million-dollar component redesigns, and directed the formal qualification of systems intended for use in the most extreme environments imaginable.
This journey from the mud of the test track to the sterile clean rooms of national labs revealed a fundamental gap: the immense difference between academic experience and the unwritten, high-stakes cultural and professional rules needed to succeed in the world of national security.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and is completing a Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University focused on the intersection of technology and defense strategy.
Alec wrote this book after years of mentoring junior engineers and watching them struggle with the same intimidating "black box" he faced. He created it to be the map he wishes he'd had: a comprehensive, no-nonsense "insider's guide" designed to demystify the industry and empower the next generation of engineers to build careers of purpose, integrity, and impact.
