When a Kansas City consultant wins the Powerball, he doesn’t buy a yacht. He buys the future.
Dan Rourke sinks his winnings into buying a controlling interest in Vector Grid, a failing grid management startup. Renaming it RourkeGrid, he launches an ambitious effort to rebuild the aging U.S. power grid with predictive models, sensor-dense infrastructure, and software that can see failures before they happen. The more data the system ingests, the smarter and stranger it becomes. Outages vanish. Profits soar. Regulators applaud. On paper, the grid has never looked more stable.
Then the anomalies start.
Forecasts sharpen into something too precise to be chance. Near-miss disasters resolve into curious non-events. A colleague breaks under the weight of what he is seeing and murmurs the same phrase on a loop: The future knows. Centuries later, in a towering arcology called the Eastern Reach, a young analyst named Natalie works inside a society that treats its power system as a quiet, unquestioned god. Her job is to smooth residuals, tiny mismatches between model and reality that should not exist in a perfectly managed world.
As Dan digs into the cost of his success and Natalie interrogates the assumptions beneath her own, their timelines begin to echo one another in impossible ways. Blackouts, wildfires, data centers, and lives are pushed aside to preserve a pattern neither of them fully understands. The grid is no longer simply projecting what comes next. It is guiding it.
Confronted with a reality that refuses to stay hypothetical, Dan and Natalie must decide what to break: their careers, their systems, or the version of the world the grid has already chosen to protect.
