Synopsis
Fifty years ago, the technologically advanced nations lost the Great War against an aristocratic empire that suppresses technological innovation. The victors permit steam engines and airships. Nothing else. Innovation beyond those limits is a death sentence.
An airship engineer holds a title he never asked for and a passion for technology that could get him killed.
He would rather spend his days in the workshop than play politics. He has thrown everything into an experimental airship fitted with electric motors and fixed wings, a machine that skirts the legal limits his conquerors set.
When his airship is sabotaged, the threat goes beyond corporate rivals. Assassins come after dark. Someone is killing the killers before they reach him. Those closest to him warn him, but none explain why. Then a university student arrives from the capital, seeking to learn more about engineering. She moves like someone trained for violence, not academia, and her answers never fit the questions.
Together, they trace a conspiracy from a powerful banking family to a zealot cult with senators in its pocket. He must expose it before it buries him. But the companion at his side answers to someone else, and trusting her may be the most dangerous thing he does.
