A-2 Stand [Fillmore Stand], Volume 1, Number 9

An issue of this mimeographed newsletter issued by Freedom House, a community organizing hub established in the Fillmore District of San Francisco in March 1964 to combat a proposed urban renewal project. The organization, which was primarily staffed by white college students from San Francisco State College, soon became involved in rent strikes, community organizing, job training, etc., issues that disproportionately affected the Fillmore's black community. The district was divided into 35 blocks and many of the block captains were black, including Pleasant Carson, Jr. who would go on to become executive director. By early 1965, the organization had transitioned into a direct action-oriented civil rights group that mobilized the Fillmore's black residents into protesting social and economic conditions. Carson and Freedom House were featured in Richard Young's 1969 study, "The Impact of Protest Leadership on Negro Politicians in San Francisco." Under Carson, the newsletter changed its name to the "Fillmore Stand." Corner-stapled 11" x 8 ½" mimeographed sheets, 8 pages. Light wear, staple bleed.
