Synopsis
The American National Parks are reporting record numbers of visitors each year, and this guide is intended for anyone planning a brief stop or a longer visit in any of these 50 locations. The AAA Guide To National Parks provides information including a description of each park, travel advice, food and lodging, tent and trailer sites, major points of interest, and a listing of activities from hiking and boating to naturalist programmes and scenic drives. Maps, photographs, and Nuts and Bolts sections complete the package.
Reviews
This is a nuts-and-bolts guide, best carried in the glove compartment, to the 50-plus national parks. Although readers will be attracted by the reputation of the American Automobile Association and the basic information contained here--of interest to virtually all libraries--this guide is in no way the best book on national parks. The writing is juvenile, filled with gushing adjectives, and some of the information is downright misleading. For example, Carlsbad Caverns has an elevator that takes people down into the major section of the cave, but this book mentions it only as a sidelight in a discussion of one of the tours available. The price is right and the subject is always in demand, but this guide does not do justice to our majestic national parks.
