Review
Reviewer: Mark R. Hutchinson, MD

Weighted Numerical Score: 94 - 4 Stars
As the world's leading educator of orthopedic surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) publishes this two-volume review for practicing orthopedic surgeons preparing for recertification, orthopedic residents in training, and all professionals in search of a comprehensive review.
Purpose
The goal is to provide a thorough review of the broad specialty of orthopedic surgery that can effectively prepare surgeons and residents for comprehensive examinations and insure their grasp of knowledge in the field.
Audience
The obvious target audience is orthopedic surgeons, but more specifically it is those who want to review and stay current in the specialty. In that regard, the two volumes will be especially valuable for surgeons preparing for boards, recertification, and in-training examinations.
Features
The two volumes are nicely compartmentalized into topics that are coded into the spine of the books. Each section concludes with "top testing facts" that serve as a wonderful, quick, bang- for-the-buck summary. The online availability improves convenient access for surgeons who prefer to study and review with the computer.
Assessment
AAOS has once again provided orthopedic surgeons and residents with the go-to review in the field. Other books may provide different approaches and techniques for study, but none of them have the stature of AAOS. If a resident or surgeon chooses to use one of the other books, it will almost assuredly be in addition to and not instead of this key offering. It is clearly a must buy for all orthopedists and residents preparing for examinations and, therefore, a key reference to be offered in all orthopedic libraries. This is a wonderful resource that I will be depending on for my own recertification preparation.
