Wonderfully illustrated with linocuts, this book will bring back the great joys of learning to sail. Alphabet of Boat Bits is all about the bits and pieces of a Winkle Brig, or Bumpkin—an open clinker built, gaff-rig boat that is an excellent craft in which to learn the art and science of sailing. An excellent primer for novice and expert alike.
James Dodd's hearty linocuts show in a very simple way the diversity of different boat rigs. His Alphabet of Boats started life as a teething book for his son and daughter: six English east coast boats printed onto wood and bound by a spliced rope ring. As his children cut their teeth, so the idea of an alphabet grew to defining the difference between a Smack and a Bawley, a Ketch and a Lugger, from Ark to Zulu, for young and old. Dodd is now teaching his children to sail, which brought about the follow-up book, Alphabet of Boat Bits, naming the parts of a small gaff-rigged sloop. He lives and works in Wivenhoe, Essex.
