ABC's of the Human Mind

A study of the workings of the brain explains the mind's physical structure, how it shapes personality and creativity, the reason for dreams, and related subjects

YA-- This beautifully illustrated and highly readable book succeeds in its stated purposes: to inform and entertain. The six major parts present the vast subject in a popular rather than scholarly manner. Occasionally a topic is oversimplified or mentioned superficially--a minor drawback. The book is in a question-and-answer format. The questions are listed again in the ten-page table of contents--fine for browsing, but for information, readers will rely on the excellent index. The text is supplemented by classic cases, ideas of major thinkers, and questions to ponder. Students and adults are sure to enjoy finding answers or browsing for pleasure in this appealing volume.

The human brain and its myriad manifestations in behavior are considered in this popular account of the mind. Arrangement is by broad topics (e.g., the senses, personality, family relationships) within which specific issues, framed as questions ("Can touch heal?" "Why do we laugh?"). Answers are brief, yet surprisingly informative. Current research is summarized, though not formally cited, and controversial matters are presented in a balanced fashion. Photographs, sample test questions, and individual case histories augment the text. This book is fairly similar to Jack Maguire's Care and Feeding of the Brain ( LJ 9/1/90); both books will entertain and inform the general reader.
