Item description from seller

18.8x12.8 cm, pp. [1-6] i-iii [iv] [1] 2-519 [520: blank] [521-532: ads], 58 inserted plates, other illustrations in the text, 1 inserted map (folded), original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red, pictorial paper onlay affixed to front panel, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Second edition, enlarged. One of the best Oregon Trail narratives. First printed in 1863 in Olympia, Washington as NOTES BY THE WAY. MEMORANDA OF A JOURNEY ACROSS THE PLAINS (a great rarity of Western Americana) and reprinted in 1872 (pretty much unprocurable as well). This second edition, enlarged by Judge Hewitt's nephew and namesake, with plates and a map added. "A well-written and detailed account of an overland journey from St. Joseph, Mo., to Olympia, Wash., in 1862" (Soliday). "This is a detailed narrative to the Northwest part of the nation via South Pass. The author went from Ft. Laramie by way of the Lander cutoff through what is now Wyoming and over the Mullan Road to the Columbia. Hewitt's journal is one of the few printed of an 1862 crossing" (Mintz). The book has no list of illustrations. Some copies of the book have 59 illustrations on inserted plates. This copy has 58, but the plate reported often missing, "Variegated Bluffs -- Green River" facing page 230, is present here. Graff 1875. Howes H447. Mattes 1845. Mintz 222. Smith 4393. Some scattered foxing, mainly frontispiece tissue guard and endpapers, a very good copy. (#166981). …
