Add to basketOffering an Associated Press glossy photograph, 8 ½ x 10, of RUSSELL MEANS (left) and DENNIS BANKS (right) as leading participants in the Wounded Knee protest. Seen here, Means was speaking to newsmen at Wounded Knee. The information listed in the cutline wrongly identified the two. Means is on the left and Banks is on the right listening. The American Indian Movement (AIM) is one of the most significant Native American grassroots civil rights organizations, which emerged in the late 1960s, in response to systemic issues affecting Native Americans, including police brutality, high unemployment, racial discrimination, poverty and broken treaty obligations by the U.S. government. In 1972, a cross-country protest caravan ended with the occupations of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, DC. Protestors demanded that the U.S. honor treaty rights and improve living conditions. In 1973, AIM and Oglala Lakota residents occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation for 71 days. An armed conflict with federal agents became a turning point in Native activism. In 1978, a protest march to Washington, DC, helped defeat several anti-Indian bills and highlighted the need to protect Native rights. A fine historic photograph of a highly important Civil Rights movement, which continues today. Mild toning. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer.
