The Macmillan 1866 edition was published in Christmas of 1865, before the Appleton edition: ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND First UK edition, 1866 First Published Printing, FIRST STATE/FIRST ISSUE:A near fine/very good plus hardcover copy, with the original red cloth covered boards. FIRST STATE with theInverted S; on the last line of the contents page, and with the earliestknown end-papers in light blue. The 1866 edition is the unofficial second edition, but is considered the official first published edition of the book, as the 1865 edition was recalled.; Of the copies showing 1865 on the title page, only 23 copies survived and only 5 of those are in private hands, the rest are in public institutions.Macmillan quickly reprinted the book using this 1866 title page, with copies available as early as November 1865, making this the first edition available for purchase at bookstores. Original publisher's pictorial red cloth ruled in vibrant gilt, covers with gilt vignettes (Alice on front, Cheshire Cat on rear), spine lettered in gilt, light blue endpapers, Burn's ticket on lower pastedown.Professionally rebacked, with the binding now tight and square, and the book has no edgewear. Full gilt outer page block in excellent condition. Please see the many images. The original tissue guard is present, although foxed, which caused foxing to the pages which flank the tissue guard, otherwise the book is internally overall remarkably clean for this title with but some intermittent light foxing. All pages and illustrations are present. Neat scripted owner name and date of "1865" to half title page. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS First UK edition, 1872 First Printing, FIRST STATE/FIRST ISSUE A remarkably clean first printing hardcover with the original red cloth covered boards. First Edition, first issue, with misprint "wade" for "wabe" on page 21. Original publisher's pictorial red cloth ruled in vibrant gilt, covers with gilt vignettes, spine lettered in gilt, original deep green/blue end papers, Burn's ticket on lower pastedown.Professional rebacked with the binding now tight and square, and the book has no edgewear. The gilt remains vibrant unlike most copies, please see the many images. Full gilt outer page block in excellent condition. The original tissue guard is present. All pages and illustrations are present and very clean , with but a veryoccasional handling mark. Neat scripted owner name and date of "1871" to the half title page. In this book, Alice returns to Wonderland by stepping through a mirror, playing out her journey like a game of chess. The set is accompanied by a light rubbed and toned clamshell. .
