We treat topics in the order in which exploration in a frontier-setting might proceed. First, we focus on the basic conditions which must be met for alluvial fans to form. This permits identifcation of the tectonic settings where one might search for anicent alluvial-fan depostis and allows cataloguing of the properties of various tectonic settings which control fan morphology and facies. This book is an outgrowth of a series of lectures on alluvial fans and fan deltas presented by the authors to the Sohio Petroleum Company in May 1985.
