"No attempt has been made to explain how the Alps came into being, or how in the course of long ages their outlines and valleys may have changed. In the early chapter the Alps are looked at from the physical side. Then we come to Man in the Alps. In particular, an attempt has been made to trace out the political or territorial history of the chief summits of the Alps. In the later chapters Man is considered in his relation to the principal passes across the Alps and as the explorer of the inntermost recesses of the High, or snowy Alps. In the final chapter the Alps is looked at as a whole, and considered in detail as forming 20 groups, with divers characteristic features."
