Full title: AMATEUR AMUSEMENTS. BY PROFESSOR LORENTO. INCLUDING ALMOST EVERY KIND OF PLAY AND SPORT SUITABLE FOR PARTIES AND PARLOR RECREATIONS, GIVING FULL DIRECTIONS HOW TO GET UP SHADOW PANTOMIMES, GALLANTY SHOWS, SHORT COMIC PLAYS WHICH ARE ALL FULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH CAPITAL PICTURES; ALSO, SHOWING HOW TO DO ALL KINDS OF CONJUROR'S & MAGICIAN'S TRICKS WITH ILLUSTRATIVE ENGRAVINGS. HUNDREDS OF CONUNDRUMS, PUZZLES, RIDDLES, AND INGENIOUS PROBLEMS. THE CHINESE WIZZARD'S WAY OF WORKING WONDERFUL FEATS, MAGIC AND PUZZLES, TO WHICH IS ADDED A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE ELEGANT AND FASHIONABLE ENTERTAINMENT OF ACTING CHARADES, AND A CHOICE SELECTION OF TABLEAU VIVANTS, OR LIVING PICTURES. [2], i-iv, 7-376 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12.75cm. Original dark brown cloth mottled, spine ends bumped, spine's gilt stamped title block remains bright. Usual strong toning and some brittleness to interior leaves as is often the case with Hurst & Company publications as they rarely utilized quality paper in their production process. Several early leaves have creasing at fore-edges; some foxing to pages as well. Binding is still firm. A good copy of a quite uncommon book as OCLC cites copies at only seventeen member libraries. The book's "Magic and Conjuring" section runs from pages 177-287. Hurst issued this book with a number of different colored bindings of which there is no known priority. This copy is without Hurst's brief advertising section at rear as well as without their usual "Arlington Edition" statement upon the front cover and/or spine. Professor Lorento is most certainly a pseudonym but, so far, the author's true identity remains unknown. Hurst was primarily a reprint/pirate publisher and rarely issued original works so it is possible that the book is an amalgamation of material from varied sources.…
