Davis served as United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James's from 1918 to 1921, and this volume presents his daily record of that tenure. Edited by his daughter Julia Davis and published by West Virginia University Press in 1993, the diary covers the immediate aftermath of the First World War, the closing period of Woodrow Wilson's presidency, the Russian Revolution, the Irish question, and the early jockeying over international oil interests. Davis, a West Virginia Democrat, would later receive his party's presidential nomination in 1924, losing to Calvin Coolidge.
