ABRAHAM KUYPER was a renowned Dutch theologian and political leader. Educated in Dutch Reformed theology at the University of Leyden in the Netherlands, Kuyper served as a pastor from 1868-1874, editor-in-chief of the weekly publication Herautas, and the editor of the daily publication De Standaard for almost fifty years. He also founded the Free Reformed University in Amsterdam in 1880 and the Free Reformed Church in 1886.
From 1901-1905 Kuyper served as prime minister of the Netherlands. Kuyper believed in using the church's influence to promote a "purer public national life." His goal was to give the "common people" a voice in government, and his contributions led to suffrage rights for all citizens and the development of today's plural society in the Netherlands.
