The interior of the book is tight, as though never read, and the archival paper used in printing is clean of any marks, or nameplates. Commonly known as Andersonville the Confederate military prison facility was officially named Camp Sumter and was established in Macon County, in southwest Georgia in 1864. The prison stockade designed to hold 10,000 prisoners at one time held as many as 33,000. Nearly 13,000 of the 45,000 men who entered the stockade died there. By the time it closed in early May 1865, the sanitation, health, and mortality problems stemming from its overcrowding, had earned Andersonville a reputation as the most notorious of Confederate atrocities inflicted on Union troops.
