During the American Civil War, Georgia's Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) held 45,000 Union prisioners. Due to overcrowding, lack of food, contaminated water and disease, 13,000 prisoners died. In 1865, the camp's commandant, Captain Henry Wirz, was court marshalled and executed, becoming the only Confederate officer to be executed during the war.
