About this Item

Description:

[4],107pp. Half title. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, leather label. Faint dampstain on half title, titlepage, and a couple leaves of text, else very good. The pamphlet to which this forms a reply was written by judges Adam Mabane, Thomas Dunn, and Jean-Claude Panet to defend their conduct against attacks and criticisms leveled by Sir James Monk in his STATE OF THE PRESENT FORM OF GOVERNMENT OF THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC (1789). Monk, attorney-general of Quebec from 1776 to 1789, was one of the most outspoken critics of the existing judicial system, and argued strongly in favor of legal and governmental anglicanization. He was suspended from office following his appearance before the investigation committee appointed in 1787 by Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester. Attributed to Francis Maseres, former attorney-general of Quebec, the ANSWER. presents a defense of Monk and a review of the administration of justice in Quebec. GAGNON II:71. SABIN 66990. LANDE 623.
