various sizes, but mostly 4to. monograph is cloth, dust jacket, paper specimens. variously paginated. This archive consists of seven (7) pieces that relate or were designed by the famed graphic artist and author, Ladislav Sutnar. Most in pristine condition, with only a few signs of very minor wear. Very rare. Items in the archive include: Adventures with a Logotype (1959), "the quest for symbols" (1959), How to Show Telephone Numbers on Letterheads (Circa 1960), reprint of the article New Graphic Design Jazzes Up Ads (originally written in Business Week, August 12, 1961), and Modern Design in Advertising (n.d., but circa 1963, Robert Altshuler and Ralph Gates, New York). Also included is a narrow 8vo paper wrapper piece by Robert W. Sarnoff titled Business and Society (1971). Finally, and the most valuable piece of the archive, is the first edition of Visual Design in Action - Principles, Purposes with the accompaning narrow stiff-paper wrappers catalogue of the exhibition held in 1961 hosted by The Contemporary Arts Center and Champion Papers Inc. (Hastings House, 1961, New York, some foxing to the cloth boards, else fine in a near fine dust jacket). Ladislav Sutnar has won acclaim both in Europe and the United States. He was the Chief designer for Czechoslovakia at the 1939 World's Fair and had his own firm in New York City. He was the winner of innumerable design awards during the early part of the 20th century, as well as being a successful author on type and graphic design. Although he is uncredited, his contributions to business organization benefited society, which included creating a user-friendly telephone directory by implementing parenthetical area codes. monograph is cloth, dust jacket, paper specimens.
