As a diplomat, he visited countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal, and it was during his travels that he begun to publish works of art history, just as it was on national territory that he took an interest in Portuguese art, an interest that was reflected in this work, conceived through 28 letters, demonstrating skill in his work as a collector of facts, documents and historical testimonies about works and artists.
