BOOK DESCRIPTION: 2 Volumes, each 8vo, xi, 620, ix, 610 pgs, index, facsimiles, illustrations, portraits. Original red cloth with gilt titled spines; top edge gilt. Second Edition. DESCRIPTION: Covers are lightly stained, minor rubbing to edges and spine ends. Interior has inked names of former owners, vol. 2 has inked name on title page, else are clean and tight. With clear mylar wrappers. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Oliver Otis Howard was a career Army officer and Union general during the Civil War. Howard lost his right arm while leading his men against Confederate forces at the Battle of Fair Oaks in June 1862, an action which later earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war he founded Howard University and served as its President 1867-1873. Returning to the Army in the West, he led troops against the Apache, famously led the military pursuit against the Nez Perce in Idaho and Montana in 1876, fought against the Bannocks and Paiutes in 1878 and the Sheepeaters in 1879.
