Quarto, stiff illustrated wraps with French flaps, b&w illus, and photographs by Donald Thomson bibliography, pp xv, 157. Near fine condition. Rare. The front cover shows a Mildjingi man mixing fibres (and possibly parrot feathers), photographed by Donald Thomson. Alan West, former Curator in Anthropology and Research Associate in Museum Victoria's Indigenous Cultures Department, has devoted years of effort to the study of bags, nets and cordage made by Australian Aborigines. He carried out fieldwork among Aboriginal communities on both west and east coasts of Cape York Peninsula where he added considerable depth to his knowledge of the manufacture of cordage and the creation of other artefacts from it. The book contains many photographs of the manufacturing process as well as detailed diagrams of weaving techniques, meticulously derived through a study of artefacts held in the collections of Museum Victoria.
