Eyre and Spottiswoode for HMSO, London, 1862; 4to, 240 x 295mm; pp 744; numerous tables throughout; standard blue thick paper wrappers; front and back covers detached as also are the front fly and the title, these text leaves frayed at the edges in consequence but with the balance of the book clean, tight and in good condition. . . . 12 of the 31 meteorological stations used are within the British Isles, the others being in Canada, Corfu, Gibraltar, Malta, the West Indies, Hong Kong, St Helena, Mauritius, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Freemantle, Aukland and Graham's Town. Observations were taken at 09.30 daily and in the same form, thereby providing good understanding of the climate at any one time during the period across the localities surveyed, the specific intention being for understanding of what the troops stationed in the various localities would experience. The observations (typically barometric pressure, temperature ranges and precipitation) are printed by location, the tables followed by observations made locally as to weather experienced, plant growth and prevalence of infectious and other diseases being variously included. The editor, a geologist and FRS was then in the War Office as the Director of the Ordnance Survey and the Topgraphical Department. . . .
