The Acceptable Canon

We know addiction when it destroys a life.

We are slower to see it when it builds one.

A trader calls it stewardship.

A lawyer calls it focus.

A father calls it provision.

A mother calls it intention.

A pastor calls it vigilance.

Each believes the same quiet lie:

My compulsion is the acceptable one.

Through a series of interconnected portraits, The Acceptable Canon explores the addictions we praise, the habits we baptize, and the compulsions we mistake for virtue. From trading screens and ministry platforms to family ambitions and carefully managed lives, each character reveals a different expression of the same hidden bondage: the need to control, justify, achieve, and remain acceptable.

Written in C.O. Shepherdson’s spare, contemplative style, this book invites readers to examine the respectable addictions that often escape scrutiny because they produce results, earn applause, or wear religious language.

This is not a book about obvious ruin.

It is a book about the chains that hide behind success.

And about the Grace that waits patiently for those willing to step into the light and be seen.
