English priest Titus Oates fabricated the existence of a massive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II, which led to the execution of over twenty innocent men.Newgate chaplain Samuel Smith describes his interactions with fourteen executed men who were falsely accused of involvement in the plot, presenting 'a confutation of their appeals, courage, and cheerfulness, at execution'. He details the confessions of men including Thomas Whitbread, Richard Langhorne and John Fenwick, all victims of the fictitious plot. Unbound, as issued. Light handling marks to front wrap.
