A very scarce pamphlet discussing the 1707 Convocations of the Church of England. A very scarce pamphlet attributed to the politician and bishop Francis Atterbury on the changes to the convocations of Canterbury and York. Predominantly in English, with sections in Latin. The Convocations of Canterbury and York are assemblies where the bishops and clergy of the two provinces which comprise the Church of England meet to take counsel for the well-being of the church, and to approve canonical legislation. However, in practice much time was spent discussing the amount of tax to be paid to the Crown, since the clergy were a separate estate and refused to be taxed through Parliament. Since the fifteenth century each convocation has sat as two houses: an upper house of bishops and a lower house of other clergy. As evidenced in this pamphlet, the growing divisions between the Tory-dominated Lower house and more liberalist Upper house were political, not theological. With a prior owner's ink inscription to the front cover, 'A Hesbury'. A prior owner has also attributed to the work to Francis Atterbury in pencil to the front cover. Unbound. Externally, sound. The outer pages are a little grubby. Internally, generally firmly bound. The pamphlet has split into two clusters, with the final page of the second cluster disbound. Pages are lightly foxed. Fair.
