Account of Some Early Proposals for Steam Navigation (Classic Reprint)

From the earliest experiments to the question of moving ships by steam, this book uncovers the birth of steam navigation.

A careful historical account follows the ideas, debates, and practical challenges that shaped the first steps toward propelling vessels with steam power.

This edition compiles notes and narrative surrounding figures like Papin, Savery, and Newton, showing how early engineers imagined engines, pumps, and paddle-wheel concepts. It also highlights the role of the Royal Society, funding hurdles, and the cautious, incremental approach scientists urged before any reliable propulsion could be proven.

• Tracks the origin of steam navigation ideas and how they evolved from theory to practical experiments.
• Profiles key players and their competing designs, from pumps to rotating oars and paddle mechanisms.
• Explains how financial constraints and experimental caution influenced early progress.
• Offers context for how later generations built on these early proposals.

Ideal for readers of the history of technology and maritime innovation.
