Grade 9 Up-- A historical survey of trade networks in Asia that focuses on the Silk Road from China, the Ambassador's and Burma Roads, plus the Eurasian Steppe and Russian River routes, adapted from Irene Franck and David Brownstone's To the Ends of the Earth (Facts on File, 1984). This provocative study does not require background reading and certainly complements the existing literature on explorers and exploration. However, the book has two problems. Many of the titles in the bibliographies are published by universities; hence, they are beyond the comprehension of this book's intended audience. Moreover, there are far too many details in the maps, thus confusing readers. Albeit, these flaws do not diminish the book's value. With an assortment of black-and-white illustrations and photographs and a good index, it will be a helpful resource. --L. R. Little, Penticton Public Library, B.C., Canada
