Carl Gustaf Mannerheim (1867-1951) was a Finnish military leader and conservative statesman who successfully defended Finland against greatly superior Soviet forces during World War II and served as the country s president (1944 46). Sponsored by the Fenno-Ugrian Society, this edition describes the extensive 14,000 mile trek through Russian Turkestan, Chinese Turkestan, Western China, the provinces of Kan Su, Shensi, and Shansi to Beijing. "The author crossed the Tien Shan from Kashgar three times, and then to Lanchow through the Gobi in the years 1906-08. From there he travelled to Peking via Shansi.
