Across State Lines

He was seen before he was understood.

In Washington, young women vanished from campuses, apartments, parks, and daylight itself. Witnesses remembered a polished young man who asked for help. They remembered a cast, a sling, a car, a calm voice, a surface so ordinary it made danger seem unreasonable. Then he moved.

Across State Lines follows the confirmed interstate escalation of Ted Bundy from Washington and Utah into Colorado and Florida through the experiences of the women whose lives were taken, the survivors who carried the truth out of his reach, and the investigators who struggled to recognize one predator moving faster than their jurisdictions could speak to one another.

The central question is not only how Bundy killed. It is how a man who left witnesses, patterns, fear, and eventually survivors behind him was able to keep becoming new in the eyes of each place he entered.

This victim-centered true crime chronicle opens with Carol DaRonch's escape, the moment survival became evidence. From there it traces the collapsing distance between charm and violence: the Washington disappearances, the Utah ruse, the fractured Western investigations, the Colorado escapes, the Florida attacks, and the public reckoning that followed. The book refuses the mythology that made Bundy seem brilliant or glamorous. It looks instead at the people he targeted, the communities that misread danger, and the systems that were too slow to connect what women had already endured.

For readers of deeply reported, emotionally serious true crime, Across State Lines is a chronicle of migratory terror, institutional delay, survivor courage, and the terrible cost of not believing patterns until they had become a map of loss.
