Scarce session printing of the Acts of the state legislature, including the original incorporation of the Union Bank, the predecessor of State Street, the second-oldest continually operating United States bank. The Union Bank evolved out of the Boston Tontine Association. "The Boston Tontine Association was one of the earliest life insurance associations in the country. It was organized to provide annuities rather than regular life insurance, and an actuarial table was affixed with the terms of admission for person five years or under set at $16.00. with ratios up to those over eighty, whose charge was $2.00" (Colonial Scene). Promoted beginning in September 1791 at one dollar per share, the Boston Tontine Association shares were exhausted by the end of October. However the Association failed to gain a charter from Massachusetts and instead were forced to convert their scrip into the newly-formed and chartered Union Bank. In lovely original condition.
