Add It Dip It Fix It: A Book of Verbs

Add it, box it, climb it, dip it. . . . Each simple verb is illustrated by a picture that shows its meaning. A large, multicolored it is added (i + t = it), boxed, climbed (with a ladder), dipped (in a glass of liquid), eaten, and shown as part of 21 other actions. R. M. Schneider's ingenious three-dimensional cut-paper pictures introduce young readers to an important language concept - painlessly.

Kindergarten-Grade 3?A fine, simple, alphabetically organized book that helps children understand action verbs such as climb, kick, lock, sew, and zip. Superior graphics that show the word "it" being dipped, ironed, ripped, etc. illustrate this playful romp. Readers will marvel at the simplicity and, at the same time, the complexity of the dramatic and colorful cut-paper collages. An unusual visual treat that can serve as an alphabet or concept book.?Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City

Ages 3^-6. Elegant cut-paper collages use the word it in all kinds of 3-D variations to illustrate verbs. We see a hand grab it, a sneaker kick it, a brush paint it, a needle sew it. The verbs are in alphabetical order, and each page is handsomely designed, with the word appearing in big type above the picture; however, the playfulness may be too abstract for young children. The audience for this will mainly be adults, who can talk about the pictures and show kids that there are words for what we do. Hazel Rochman
